Take your firearms training off the range once in awhile. If you carry a firearm for protection, fitness needs to be a big part of your training. Even without running or an empty hand fight, your heart rate is going to increase dramatically & quickly during a gunfight. Don't win the gunfight to drop dead of a heart attack.
